As seen in Strategic Alliance Quarterly, this article describes what positive influence is and how to use it to align actions, make good decisions, and solve problems within your alliance.
Using influence involves exchanging what those with the power to advance or hold back your alliance care about in return for what you need to achieve the strategic, mutual benefit intended by partnering. To some degree, we do this intuitively because we’ve been socialized from an early age to appreciate the rule of reciprocity. When we practice it systematically and purposefully, we develop mastery at it and it is indeed the alliance professional’s superpower.
